Spotlight on Risk of Rain 2
A spectacular, adrenaline-fueled 3D action shooter. Risk of Rain 2 merges a relentless, time-scaling difficulty timer with high-velocity proc-chaining item combos and distinct survivor classes, delivering a chaotic cooperative run loop that runs brilliantly on Steam Deck.
Risk of Rain 2 is a high-speed, third-person shooter action rogue-lite that brilliantly transitions its predecessor's 2D loop into a spectacular 3D survival arena. The core mechanic is the ticking timer: the game's difficulty scales actively every minute, spawning increasingly aggressive, massive boss waves as time passes. Players land on hostile alien planets and must quickly farm gold by killing enemies to unlock item chests before locating and charging the level's teleporter. The game features 11 distinct playable survivors (such as the Commando, Huntress, Loader, and Mercenary) who function as separate combat characters. Progression is centered on stacking multiple copies of items that have passive, proc-chaining behaviors: stacking 'Soldier's Syringes' dramatically scales attack speed; 'Ukeleles' chain electric lightning between crowds; and '57 Leaf Clovers' reroll random item effect chances in your favor. This leads to chaotic, high-speed late-game runs where players float through arenas detonating screens of giant monsters in seconds.
Strengths
- Hyper-kinetic, high-velocity third-person shooting and movement
- Phenomenal, massive item-stacking proc-chain combat builds
- Exceptional, distinct survivor classes with zero shared controls
Caveats
- Timer-based difficulty scaling can feel highly stressful for beginners
- Visual clutter in the late-game can completely cover the screen
Context
Developed by Hopoo Games and released by Gearbox in 2020 after a highly celebrated Early Access phase. It became a massive commercial hit, praised by critics for its exceptional soundtrack by Chris Christodoulou and cooperative multiplayer stability, securing an essential legacy in action indie history.
