Spotlight on Returnal
A breathtaking, high-velocity AAA rogue-lite. Returnal merges hyper-kinetic third-person shooting and invincibility-frame dashes with spectacular bullet-hell patterns and a dark psychological mystery, delivering a highly polished, punishingly satisfying showcase.
Returnal is a spectacular, fast-paced AAA third-person shooter action rogue-lite that blends bullet-hell mechanics with a psychological sci-fi mystery. Playing as space scout Selene trapped in a time loop on the hostile, shape-shifting planet Atropos, the gameplay is hyper-kinetic and fluid. Traversal centers on high-speed dashes—providing complete invincibility frames that let players phase through enemy projectiles—and high-speed vertical grappling. Combat is a demanding third-person bullet hell: enemies fire massive, beautiful patterns of slow-moving colored energy balls, requiring players to constantly dodge, jump, and shoot while maintaining a high-performance 'Adrenaline' multiplier (which scales stats for every five kills without taking damage). Progression centers on picking up active weapon upgrades (like the Hollowseeker or Carbine) with random trait modifiers (like portal beams or toxic rounds) and choosing risk-reward 'Parasites' that grant major combat buffs alongside punishing debuffs.
Strengths
- Hyper-fluid and satisfying 60fps third-person combat controls
- Spectacular and visually stunning bullet-hell projectile designs
- Outstanding, tactile PlayStation haptic feedback integration
Caveats
- Highly punishing campaign length without mid-run saves at launch
- Steep difficulty spike in the second biome and bosses
