Spotlight on Hollow Knight
A modern Metroidvania masterpiece. Hollow Knight combines extremely precise combat controls, dark melancholic hand-drawn visuals, and a deeply rewarding, completely unguided exploration loop to create an atmospheric classic.
Hollow Knight is a punishing, atmospheric 2D Metroidvania that sets a modern benchmark for environmental storytelling and map exploration. As a silent knight exploring the sprawling, subterranean ruins of the bug kingdom Hallownest, navigation is entirely self-directed. The game utilizes a high-friction map mechanic: you must buy regional charts, locate a cartographer (Cornifer), and buy a compass charm just to see your position on the map. Combat is exceptionally tight and minimalist, relying on precise melee nail swings, directional pogo-jumping on enemies, and utilizing 'Soul' (gained by hitting foes) to either shoot magic blasts or pause to heal. Exploration is deeply non-linear, allowing you to get lost in dark, beautiful hand-drawn zones (like the City of Tears orGreenpath). The game features tough-as-nails platforming challenges (such as the optional Path of Pain) and incredibly fast, rhythm-like boss battles. Outstanding for handheld sessions on the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, running at a locked 60fps.
Strengths
- Incredibly tight, responsive 2D combat
- Hauntingly beautiful hand-drawn art & music
- Massive, deeply non-linear map design
Caveats
- Unforgiving corpse-run death mechanic
- Early-game navigation feels slow without compass
Context
Developed by Team Cherry, a tiny Australian studio of three people, and funded via Kickstarter. Released in 2017 to universal acclaim, it became a massive commercial hit and established an obsessive cult following awaiting its sequel, Silksong.
