Spotlight on The Messenger

genre gatewayexploration-firstcomfort replaywhimsical-funFunnyWhimsicalTense

A wittily written, mechanically brilliant action-platformer. The Messenger combines hyper-tight Ninja Gaiden style jumping and Cloudstepping controls with a spectacular 8-to-16-bit temporal shift that turns a linear retro homage into a massive, clever Metroidvania puzzle box.

The Messenger is a highly creative 2D side-scrolling action-platformer that starts as a spectacular 8-bit homage to Ninja Gaiden before executing a mind-bending shift into a 16-bit Metroidvania. You play as a young ninja tasked with delivering a sacred scroll across a demon-infested world. The core movement mechanic is 'Cloudstepping'—striking an enemy, projectile, or environmental lantern in mid-air grants an extra jump trigger, allowing players to chain jumps to glide over spike pits. The game's primary mechanical twist is the temporal shift: midway through the campaign, the game shifts between 8-bit (representing the past) and 16-bit (representing the future). This shift is not just visual; it alters the music score (chiptune vs synth-rock) and changes the physical terrain in real-time: blocking walls in 8-bit disappear in 16-bit, transforming linear platforming stages into a giant, interconnected Metroidvania backtracking grid.

Strengths

  • Hyper-precise and satisfying Cloudstepping jump mechanics
  • Brilliant, seamless 8-to-16-bit temporal shift visual design
  • Wittily written, hilarious narrative script and characters

Caveats

  • Pacing slows down slightly during the late-game Metroidvania search
  • Relatively simple early-game level designs before the shift occurs

Context

Developed by Sabotage Studio (later known for Sea of Stars) and published by Devolver Digital in 2018. It won Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards, praised for its tight gameplay feel, hilarious dialogue with 'The Shopkeeper', and outstanding soundtrack by Rainbowdragoneyes, launching Sabotage into global fame.
