Spotlight on Metroid Fusion
A spectacular, tension-filled Metroidvania classic. Metroid Fusion pairs Samus's classic progression lock-and-key exploration with survival-horror SA-X stealth chases and highly responsive 2D side-scrolling traversal.
Metroid Fusion is a legendary, highly atmospheric 2D side-scrolling action-adventure that brought survival-horror tension to the Metroidvania franchise. Infected by the parasitic X-Organism and saved by Metroid vaccine DNA, Samus Aran must explore the Biologic Space Labs research station. The game's primary mechanical highlight is the introduction of the SA-X—a terrifying, fully powered clone of Samus that patrols the station. This introduces intense stealth sequences: players must hide behind grates and freeze SA-X using Ice Missiles to escape, as direct confrontation triggers instant death. Traversal is fluid and tight, featuring classic ledge-grabbing, wall-jumping, and unlocking suit upgrades (like the Morph Ball or Speed Booster) to clear parasitic organic barriers. Samus absorbs floating X-parasites post-defeat to recharge health and missiles, creating a rapid, tactical recovery loop.
Strengths
- Incredible, high-tension SA-X stealth chase sequences and survival atmosphere
- Exceptionally tight, fluid, and responsive 2D platforming controls
- Superb classic upgrade progression (Morph Ball, Missiles, Screw Attack)
Caveats
- Significantly more linear and guided than traditional open-ended Metroid games
- High difficulty spikes during challenging, high-damage boss encounters
Context
Developed by Nintendo R&D1 and released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance, alongside Metroid Prime. It represented a major narrative leap for the series and remains celebrated by platformer fans globally as one of the best and most atmospheric 2D Metroid entries ever made.
