Spotlight on Against the Storm

systems-heavycozy but strategiccomfort replaytactical pressureTenseChaoticBleak

A brilliant, hyper-addictive fusion of roguelite progression and survival city-building. Against the Storm completely rewrites the pacing of the strategy genre by turning the slow sandbox management loop into a series of tense, highly satisfying 60-minute tactical runs.

Against the Storm is a highly innovative, addictive roguelite city builder set in a dark fantasy world cursed by a perpetual, devastating storm. Playing as the Viceroy of the Scorched Queen, your goal is to build a network of sustainable frontier settlements to harvest resources and send them back to the Smoldering City. Crucially, the gameplay merges classic production-chain management with rogue-lite run mechanics: each settlement is a 45-to-60-minute run where you must satisfy different species (Humans, Beavers, Lizards, Harpies, Foxes), each having distinct diet, housing, and luxury preferences. Instead of infinite sandbox growth, you race against the Queen’s Impatience meter by completing timed orders and resolving dangerous glades. You open glades by cutting through forest walls, which triggers systemic positive or negative environmental events (such as blood flower infestations, toxic rain, or ancient ruins). Earning reputation points wins the run, while permanent upgrades (like building blueprints and passive starting bonuses) are unlocked back at the Smoldering City hub using harvested resources.

Strengths

  • Highly addictive roguelite pacing that makes city-building feel urgent and satisfying
  • Exceptional, deep mechanical interactions between five distinct citizen species
  • Superb variety of random cornerstones and blueprint drafts that keep runs fresh

Caveats

  • Queen's Impatience and Forest Hostility meters can feel highly stressful to casual players
  • Early-game runs can feel slightly repetitive before unlocking higher-tier species and buildings

Context

Developed by Eremite Games and published by Hooded Horse in 2023 after a highly successful Early Access period. It won widespread critical acclaim and multiple strategy design awards, praised by critics for its brilliant pacing and highly active, stress-filled loops that breathe new life into strategy games.
