Spotlight on Blasphemous
A brutally challenging, highly artistic gothic Metroidvania. Blasphemous merges punishing combat parry timing and high-stakes platforming hazards with a breathtakingly grotesque, Spanish religious-horror pixel art direction that is completely unique in the genre.
Blasphemous is a punishing, darkly beautiful 2D side-scrolling Metroidvania that combines challenging, stamina-free combat with a haunting, Spanish gothic pixel art aesthetic. Set in the cursed, religious land of Cvstodia, you play as The Penitent One, wielding a giant thorn-wrapped sword called the Mea Culpa. Combat is highly methodical and punishing, emphasizing precise horizontal parry timing, sliding evasions, and brutal, frame-perfect executions. Rather than traditional leveling stats, progression is governed by collecting Rosary Beads that grant elemental resistance buffs, Sword Hearts that trade damage parameters for defensive penalties, and prayers (special spells). Traversal is gatelocked by classic Metroidvania upgrades, but also requires locating relic items that make environmental platforms visible or allow Samus-like jumps through poisonous mist. The game features heavy religious motifs, a haunting acoustic guitar score, and massive, terrifying boss battles.
Strengths
- Grotesquely beautiful, highly detailed 2D gothic pixel art
- Methodical, highly satisfying parrying and execution swordplay
- Haunting and dense Seville-themed acoustic soundtrack
Caveats
- Instant-death spikes can make early-game platforming frustrating
- Late-game backtracking is slow due to limited fast-travel portals
Context
Developed by Spanish studio The Game Kitchen and funded via a highly successful Kickstarter campaign in 2017. It achieved massive critical and commercial success, selling over one million copies, praised worldwide for its dark fantasy atmosphere, and later spawning a highly acclaimed sequel.
