Spotlight on Hollow Knight: Silksong

exploration-firstsystems-heavytactical pressuremystery-archaeologyMysteriousTenseLonely

A hyper-kinetic, acrobatic Metroidvania masterpiece that elevates the standard of its predecessor. Hollow Knight: Silksong couples Hornet's vertical acrobatic traversal with deep silk-crafting mechanics and aggressive healing loops to deliver a breathtaking exploration challenge.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is the highly anticipated, action-packed Metroidvania sequel to the landmark original Hollow Knight. You play as Hornet, the princess-protector of Hallownest, captured and taken to Pharloom—a mysterious, vertical kingdom ruled by song and silk. Traversal is kinetic, high-speed, and vertical: unlike the Knight's slower, grounded sword-slashing, Hornet is highly agile, utilizing acrobatic wall-climbs, precise diagonal dash-clings, and high-speed grapple silk-hooks to navigate thorny branches and copper chambers. The combat has a unique risk-reward loop: Hornet heals herself instantly by spending gathered silk reels (replenished instantly by striking enemies), forcing aggressive close-range play. She crafts and equips unique combat tools (like spike traps, throwing pins, and brass compasses) using shell shards harvested from robotic enemies. The world features a gorgeous hand-drawn art style paired with a sweeping orchestral score by Christopher Larkin.

Strengths

  • Highly responsive, acrobatic, and vertical character traversal and speed
  • Spectacular, incredibly detailed hand-drawn environments and animation frames
  • Deep and satisfying combat tool crafting using shell shard resources

Caveats

  • Punishing boss fights require precise reflex and timing memorization
  • High difficulty curve in early-game traversal before unlocking key dash relics

Context

Announced by Team Cherry as a full-scale sequel in 2019 after originally being planned as a Kickstarter DLC expansion. It became one of the most anticipated and discussed indies in gaming history, winning multiple awards for anticipation and celebrated for its flawless physical refinements.
