Spotlight on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
A masterclass in modern Metroidvania design. The Lost Crown combines exceptionally responsive air-dashing traversal controls and complex Time Powers with hyper-kinetic combo-heavy parry combat and the industry-standard Memory Shard map-pinning system, setting a new benchmark for the genre.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a spectacular, lightning-fast 2D side-scrolling Metroidvania that redefines modern platforming traversal with exceptionally fluid aerial movement and highly technical parry combat. You play as Sargon, a member of the elite Immortals exploring the cursed, time-bent Mount Qaf. The game's defining mechanical triumph is its suite of 'Time Powers': Rush of Simurgh allows high-speed horizontal air dashing; Shadow of the Simurgh lets players place a shadow copy of themselves in real-time and teleport back to it instantly (useful for bypassing traps or creating complex combat setups); and Dimensional Claw traps environmental hazards or enemies to hurl them back as projectiles. Combat is hyper-kinetic and combo-heavy, blending dual-swords melee with a high-stakes, colored flash parry system where normal attacks can be parried, yellow flashes trigger visual cinematic counter-kills, and red flashes are unblockable. The game features an outstanding 'Memory Shards' accessibility feature, letting players take screenshots of the environment and pin them directly to the map to solve backtracking.
Strengths
- Hyper-responsive, fluid air-dashing movement traversal controls
- Deep, tactical parry-heavy combo action combat systems
- Revolutionary and highly convenient Memory Shards screenshot map pinning
Caveats
- Relatively generic early-game story and visual designs
- Character modeling looks slightly flat in some close-up dialogue scenes
Context
Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier (creators of Rayman Legends) and released in 2024 to widespread critical acclaim. While initially met with skepticism from Prince of Persia purists, it went on to receive universal praise for its stellar mechanical design and outstanding accessibility options.
