Spotlight on Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
A hauntingly beautiful, gothic summon-based Metroidvania. Ender Lilies combines a deeply melancholic story and a phenomenal piano soundtrack by Mili with unique spirit-summoning action combat, offering a highly polished, atmospheric adventure.
Ender Lilies is a beautiful, melancholic 2D side-scrolling Metroidvania that features a dark-fantasy gothic world where combat centers on summoning fallen spirits to fight. You play as Lily, the last surviving Priestess, who wakes up in the ruined, rain-drenched kingdom of Land's End. Lily herself is defenseless and cannot strike; instead, combat is built on equipping and summoning purified boss spirits ('Umbral Knights') who execute attacks on her behalf. You can equip up to six spirits simultaneously, mapping them to action buttons: the standard Umbral Knight swings a physical sword, a giant hammer knight smashes shields, a gothic crow shoots magic projectiles, and others trigger dash or parry moves. Progression is gatelocked by classic exploration upgrades (like swimming, wall-clinging, and double-jumping) and leveling spirits using collected Red and White Blight resources.
Strengths
- Phenomenal, emotionally moving piano orchestral score by Mili
- Highly innovative spirit-summoning custom combat systems
- Superb and convenient room-completion map interface indicator
Caveats
- Lily's physical dodging animation has a stiff, slow frame feel
- Some late-game map layouts rely heavily on toxic mist rooms
Context
Developed by Live Wire and Adglobe, and published by Binary Haze Interactive in 2021. It became a major indie hit, praised by critics for its extremely polished room-based map UI (which highlights fully searched rooms in orange) and phenomenal soundtrack composed by musical group Mili (known for anime scores), securing a strong cult legacy.
