Spotlight on Axiom Verge

exploration-firstsystems-heavycomfort replaymystery-archaeologyLonelyTenseMeditative

A brilliant, highly atmospheric sci-fi Metroidvania. Axiom Verge combines classic NES Metroid isolation and map routing with a highly creative reality-hacking ray gun and a spectacular, screeching industrial synth soundtrack, delivering an essential indie masterwork.

Axiom Verge is a highly atmospheric, solo-developed 2D Metroidvania that serves as a spectacular homage to classic NES Metroid while introducing brilliant glitches and reality-hacking mechanics. You play as Trace, a scientist waking up after a laboratory accident in the alien, biomechanical world of Sudra. The game's primary mechanical innovation is the 'Address Disruptor'—a hacking ray gun used to glitch the environment and enemies: players can shoot glitch rays to turn invulnerable wall barriers into passive phase platforms, convert aggressive flying drones into resource generators, or make charging beasts attack other monsters. Traversal is dense and rewarding, featuring a teleportation drone that can be launched into small tunnels, and an phase-dash that lets Trace pass through solid one-way walls. The combat arsenal is massive, featuring over 20 completely distinct sci-fi guns (such as lightning rays, bounce-rings, and homing beams) that can be swapped dynamically to map the sprawling, dark world.

Strengths

  • Highly innovative environmental glitched Address Disruptor mechanics
  • Spectacular, massive arsenal of over 20 distinct sci-fi weapons
  • Haunting and dense sci-fi isolation atmosphere and art

Caveats

  • Backtracking search parameters can feel highly cryptic in the late-game
  • Boss encounter strategies are relatively simple and easily cheesed

Context

Released in 2015 to universal critical acclaim. It won multiple indie design nominations, saved as a key pillar in the mid-decade indie Metroidvania revival, and established Thomas Happ as a premier developer in the industry, later spawning Axiom Verge 2.
