FSO - Freespace 2 Open
About this entry
FreeSpace 2 Open (FSO) is a fan-driven, open-source enhancement of the classic 1999 space combat simulator FreeSpace 2. Initiated after the game's source code was released in 2002 by the FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project (SCP), FSO updates the engine to run natively on modern operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux). It features massive graphical overhauls including support for high resolutions, advanced shaders, and high-polygon models (via community 'MediaVPs' packs). It also serves as a platform for numerous total conversions and community campaigns.
FSO - Freespace 2 Open is listed as a Open Source entry in CheckpointDB's preservation database.
It is grouped under Space Combat Simulator, making it easier to compare with related preservation projects and enhanced classics.
This record is treated as its own version or project, separate from normal game database entries.
