Spotlight on Citizen Sleeper
A spectacular, tabletop-inspired sci-fi narrative RPG. Citizen Sleeper masterfully pairs a tense, highly strategic dice-allocation loop with exceptional, empathetic writing and gorgeous character art to deliver an unforgettable tale of humanity and survival under capitalism.
Citizen Sleeper is a brilliant, highly atmospheric narrative RPG set on Erlin's Eye, a ruined space station home to thousands of citizens trying to survive on the fringes of interstellar capitalism. You play as a Sleeper—a digitized human consciousness inside a decaying robotic body owned by a massive corporation. The game's primary mechanical core is a unique, tabletop-inspired dice pool system: at the start of each in-game cycle (day), you roll a pool of six-sided dice. You allocate these dice to complete various station actions—such as working in shipyards, hacking databases, delivering food, or researching old logs. A high die roll (like a 5 or 6) guarantees success, while a low roll (like a 1 or 2) guarantees a risky outcome or failure. Crucially, players must balance their dice allocation between earning money, upgrading skills, and managing two active clocks: Energy (which drains daily and requires food) and Condition (which decays and requires expensive stabilizer shots to keep your dice pool from shrinking). The story is an exceptionally written, character-driven journey focusing on mutual aid, survival, and community.
