Spotlight on Kirby and the Forgotten Land

genre gatewaycozy but strategiccomfort replaywhimsical-funWhimsicalFunnyChaotic

A pure, joyous celebration of visual and mechanical creativity. Kirby and the Forgotten Land translates the copy-ability loop into a gorgeous 3D playground, elevated by the incredibly creative Mouthful Mode captures and an excellent co-op campaign.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a joyful, highly creative 3D platformer adventure that flawlessly translates the classic copy-ability gameplay into a gorgeous, post-apocalyptic sandbox. Exploring a series of beautifully detailed, overgrown ruins of a past civilization, Kirby's core copy-ability allows him to inhale enemies to copy their powers—such as shooting fireballs, swinging swords, or throwing bombs—which are permanently upgraded in Waddle Dee Town using collected blueprints and star coins. The game's primary mechanical innovation is 'Mouthful Mode'—allowing Kirby to stretch his body over massive, real-world objects: you can inhale a car to execute high-speed driving trials, a vending machine to fire soda cans, a traffic cone to smash stone barriers, or a water pipe to balloon up and spray mud away. Perfectly optimized for two-player local co-op, running at a locked, crisp 30fps.

Strengths

  • Highly creative and surprising Mouthful Mode mechanical captures
  • Satisfying and deep copy-ability upgrade progression systems
  • Gorgeous, colorful post-apocalyptic environment graphics design

Caveats

  • Main story levels are relatively easy for platforming veterans
  • Frame rates of distant animations drop to preserve performance
