Spotlight on Cocoon
A spectacular, mind-bending masterpiece of spatial puzzle design. Cocoon expands the simple concept of carrying and entering worlds into a highly elegant, visually seamless puzzle box that constantly challenges your perspective of space and depth.
Cocoon is a spectacular, mind-bending sci-fi puzzle adventure designed by the lead gameplay designer of Limbo and Inside. The core mechanical innovation is world-hopping: players carry glowing, orb-like worlds on their back. Each orb functions as a physical tool in the overworld (granting passive upgrades like showing hidden paths or powering mechanical elevators) but also contains an entire distinct world within it. By placing an orb onto a dedicated pedestal, players can seamlessly jump into the world inside the orb. This leads to brilliant, multi-layered spatial puzzles where players must carry one world inside another, organize recursive layouts, and solve complex weight and trigger trials. Combat is completely non-traditional, restricted to highly creative, tactical boss encounters where players must utilize unique orb abilities to survive.
Strengths
- Incredibly clever recursive world-within-world spatial puzzles
- Seamless visual transition performance during world hops
- Superb mechanical variety of orb tool upgrades
Caveats
- Puzzle progression is relatively linear compared to open sandboxes
- Main campaign length is short (around 5-6 hours)
Context
Developed by Danish indie studio Geometric Interactive under lead designer Jeppe Carlsen and released by Annapurna Interactive in 2023. It won Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards, universally praised for its visual lighting and flawless recursive performance transitions, cementing Carlsen's legacy.
