Spotlight on Assassin's Creed Origins
A spectacular, massive open-world JRPG-style adventure in ancient Egypt. Origins pairs a fully overhauled, loot-tiered hitbox combat system with fluid monument parkour and a real-time eagle scouting mechanic.
Assassin's Creed Origins is a spectacular, massive open-world action-RPG that completely revitalized the franchise, shifting it into a deep, loot-focused action-RPG. Playing as Bayek of Siwa, a protector of ancient Egypt, the gameplay features a fully overhauled hitbox-based combat system that replaces old counter-kill animations: players dodge-roll, block with shields, and execute light/heavy weapon combos using a vast arsenal of loot-tiered gears (common, rare, legendary swords, spears, bows). Traversal is spectacular, combining fluid parkour climbs across massive Egyptian monuments, horse/camel riding across detailed desert sandboxes, and piloting boats along the Nile. The game introduces Senu, a loyal eagle companion players control to actively scan enemy fortresses, tag guards, and locate resources in real-time.
Strengths
- Overhauled, highly responsive hitbox-based combat and shield mechanics
- Spectacular, massive, and breathtakingly detailed ancient Egypt world environment
- Excellent, highly addictive loot-tiered weapon progression and crafting systems
Caveats
- Forced level-gating requires players to complete repetitive sidequests to progress the main story
- Navigational forts follow standard, repetitive open-world checklist formulas in late-game
Context
Developed by Ubisoft Montreal and released in 2017 after a critical one-year hiatus for the franchise. It completely transformed the series from action-stealth to action-RPG, praised globally by critics for its spectacular ancient Egypt setting, beautiful historical details, and bayek's characterization.
